Ghazal

Background

The opening couplet speaks of the transience of the world: the head that is proud of its crown today will be mourned over tomorrow. “لے سانس بھی آہستہ کہ نازک ہے بہت کامآفاق کی اس کارگہ شیشہ گری کا” is also a couplet from this ghazal: the world is as fragile as a glass factory. Mir saw Delhi ruined in the invasions of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah2; this contrast between crown and lament comes from the experience of that time. On Rekhta, the ghazal is available in the voice of Zamarrud Banu (video) and in the recitation of Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Ahmad Mahfooz (audio)1.
