Background
The second couplet, “Dilli ke na thay koochay auraq-e-musawwar thayJo shakl nazar aai tasveer nazar aai”, recalls the streets of Delhi: they were not streets but pages full of pictures. According to Rekhta’s introduction, when the bloodshed of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah laid Delhi waste, Mir moved to Lucknow at the invitation of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and died there2. Rekhta has recitations of this ghazal by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Ahmad Mahfooz1.
