Manuel Neuer: the goalkeeper who plays outside his goal
Germany's Manuel Neuer won the 2014 World Cup and two Champions League titles with Bayern Munich, and has 13 Bundesliga titles.

Manuel Neuer is a German goalkeeper who won the World Cup in 2014 and the Champions League twice with Bayern Munich. According to the Bundesliga website, the 2025-26 title was his 13th German league title, which put him level with Thomas Müller, the player with the most titles in the competition1. His style of playing far beyond the penalty area earned him the name “sweeper keeper”5. At the age of 40, he is still playing for Bayern in October 20262.
Early life and beginnings
Neuer was born on 27 March 1986 in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany, the home city of Schalke 04. He joined Schalke’s youth team at the age of five and signed a professional contract in 2005. He got his first chance in the Bundesliga in the second match of the 2006-07 season, when the senior goalkeeper was injured, and soon became the team’s first-choice goalkeeper5.
Club career
Neuer was captain in his last season at Schalke, 2010-11. That season Schalke reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, where they lost to Manchester United, and won the German Cup by beating Duisburg 5-0 in the final5.
He moved to Bayern Munich in July 2011. His first season brought no trophies, but from 2013 Bayern won 11 German league titles in a row. In 2013 Bayern won the Champions League by beating Dortmund at Wembley, and in 2020 they won it a second time by beating Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon5. In 2024 the league title went to Bayer Leverkusen, but Bayern won the championship again in the next two seasons1.
Neuer has been Bayern’s captain since 20176. On 15 May 2026 the club announced a one-year extension of his contract until June 2027. Neuer said it was “a clear decision after thinking about it for some time”2.
International career
Neuer played his first match for Germany in 2009. The 2014 World Cup was held in Brazil. In the final at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time, and Neuer received the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper of the tournament35.
In July 2024, after Germany went out in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, he retired from international football with 124 caps. But in May 2026 coach Julian Nagelsmann recalled him for the World Cup and named him first-choice goalkeeper. According to Reuters, it was the fifth consecutive World Cup in which he was Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper, and he began with a 7-1 win against Curaçao3. Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay in the second round after a 1-1 draw, and Neuer said it was his last international match4.
Style of play
Neuer is a tall and strongly built goalkeeper, but what sets him apart is that he moves forward to end danger instead of waiting on the goal line. He comes out of the penalty area to clear the ball against long passes from the opposition, then starts attacks with accurate passes from his feet. For this reason he is called the model of the modern “sweeper keeper”, who gives the team’s defence the freedom to play a high line5. On his return to the World Cup, he said that being there again was “a huge gift”3.
